Canada Day (July 1st) is around the corner for us Canadian burger lovers and that means a whole lot of barbecues will be working hard and thousands if not millions of burgers will be eaten across this 145 year old glorious and beautiful country of ours. The biggest celebrations happen in our Capital,Ottawa as well as Niagara Falls. Last year my Burger Broad lovin’ man and I put our bikes on the train to Niagara Falls, cycled around and then did the Whirpool aero car that soars over the Great Gorge separating Canada from the U.S. At night we watched the festivities and spectacular fireworks over The Falls…And Then!……. of course we had to… rent the ‘you have to do it at least once, cheesy motel room with the heart shaped jacuzzi’ with mirrored walls too.HA!
So in celebration of Canada, in celebration of burgers, we welcome you to the first in a four part series where we get to *The Meat of the Matter* with Grill King, Ted Reader.
A few weeks ago we sat down with Ted to talk about burgers, frozen burgers specifically. We always say NEVER eat frozen patty grocery store burgers but after talking with Ted, we have a new respect for them…but still won’t eat them:) Find out why and stay tuned for part 2.
Hey Canadian Burger Lovers! What are you grilling on Canada Day? Live in Toronto or making the trip to Toronto? Meet Ted Reader at the Eaton Centre
I won’t be there.I will be somewhere deep in a forest camping and grilling home made burgers, but of course:) maybe I’ll take pictures.Maybe I won’t. After all it is a holiday:)
Wishing my fellow Canadian Burger Lovers a very wonderful, happy and delicious Canada Day!
If you haven’t heard of Ted Reader it’s only a matter of time before you do.
Hailed as the Kingpin of BBQ,”From snout to tail, Bali to Boston and Mongolia to Montreal.” Today, his focus is on helping novice grillers become masters of the flame with simple ideas and recipes real people can follow.”
To his credit, he has 8 cookbooks (Napolean series), 7 World Famous seasonings/sauces, 3 World Famous grilling planks and 6 Signature series Napolean Grills. He owns over 100 bbqs, he set the world record for the largest hamburger ever grilled coming in at 590lbs, and is a Product Development Chef for a major grocery chain (he invented the PC Thick & Cheesy Burgers) Phew! He is a busy guy and that’s not even the half of it! Back in January 2012 he became Canada’s newest spokesperson for Tabasco. This past week he hung out with The Wine Ladies and also did a facebook chat with Schneiders. A couple of weeks ago we were lucky to be introduced to him by Oshawa Ogre at the Beaches Ribfest here in Toronto while he grilled us up a burgasm…er..um…burger.

Afterwards, the chef/food entertainer, sat down with us and gave us a raw, candid, passionate and informative interview about frozen patty burgers and burger chain burgers. Stay tuned for a 4 part series that will be posted over the course of the next 2 weeks.
In the meantime, watch, learn and drool as Ted grills us up a burger(Chuck/Sirloin,Bacon wrapped, cheese filled and Jack Daniels injected) ..and then some! We then asked him the question ” When was the last time someone cooked YOU a burger?”
Through the course of searching out interesting burger culture tidbits on the internet we came across a gadget called “The Burger Stomper“( a hamburger press) that guarantees a perfectly cooked (meaning keeping the juices in, cooking it evenly) and perfectly shaped burger in 5 seconds.
So, now you can say bye-bye and good riddance to frozen patties. <blech>. forever.
What a great thing to have when preparing for your backyard bbq parties! no fussing, no greasy hands, perfect burgers every time…. And it’s a 2 in 1 press with the option of regular size burgers or mini burgers.
We were excited to also learn that this burger stomper gadget was a 100% Canadian invention! O ya! and had also been on The Dragons’ Den (airing soon) so we just had to find out for ourselves if this burger gadget and their burger would deliver us into burgasm heaven.
It was a couple of weeks ago we made the mad dash by foot, transit, bicycle and car to a bright and cheery and oh so relaxed burger joint,(don’t tell them we called it a joint;) that’s just how we Broads tawk..not talk.. tawk;)
This family friendly place has lots of wood (the tables are made from an old barn) and brick for decor and it just feels like you could hang out there all day with your ipad or read a book although probably not recommended because with only being open for 6 weeks so far, they are already busy with burger fiends and repeat customers. Nick, one of the owners, told us that there was a customer who had been coming in for the past 2weeks, once he discovered the place, 3 times a day! That’s just crazy! but what a testament! This place seems to definitely be a welcome addition to the neighborhood of health food stores and Greek restaurants.
Four of us Broads had 5 burgers (Better than The Other Guy,Cheese Please,The Mediterranean, Sweet Onion D and The Eggsodus PLUS Poutine and Poutine Deluxe, ( and swear it’s the best in the city) onion rings and milkshakes and not your average predictable milkshakes either. We like a sudsy cold draft of beer with our burgers but these shakes were just as intoxicating made with real ice cream. (The Nutella Chocolate Peanut Butter Heaven,Chocolate Mint, and the Birthday Cake.) They do have plans for a patio in the near future and I hope that means that it will be licensed with a beer menu of some local craft beers. Why not!?
What a stompendous, delicious time we had with lots of laughter!!. and although we had all that food mentioned above, we still..well, sorta, had room for the Pièce de résistance, The Secret Stomp. This is a burger that adorable chef/owner John experiments with his creativity delivering a burger each week with toppings that aren’t on the menu and boy was ours FUN with a Capital F! with an ooey gooey surprise which you will see in the video.
Enjoy the slideshow! There’s lots of pics here, with burger beauty shots in the mix, taken by one of our own Burger Broads @circusjo aka “capturedbysugar”

…and then join us while we eat, get loud, get sassy, get messy and interview the Owners and Inventor of The Burger Stomper
P.S..just so ya know they also have sliders and a lone Big Dog and for those of you who prefer, you can ask for a gluten free bun.
P.S.S. If you want your very own Burger Stomper you’ll just have to go in person to buy one as they aren’t readily available,YET! or you can get it here online at Amazon
As you may have noticed…. our blog is not only about burger findings, burger culture and burger obsession but also about women. And not just any kind of woman. Not only are we taking the ever so seriousness out of burger blogging and putting the fun loving fun back into it (because after all, we are not critics. we are lovers just like you….lovers of burgers) but we are also on a mission to redefine what it means to be a Broad and well..like Kids and Kam..(remember that commercial jingle?) Burgers and Broads go good together;)
However, with Father’s Day just around the corner, regardless if you are a dad or not, we want to shout out our appreciation for the men in our lives. After all, we love our men just as much as we love our burgers….The juicier, the meatier, the thicker the better;)
We Broads salute YOU.
It has been said “Behind every great man is a great woman“ and that may as well be very true but we also know..
Behind every Broad is a ‘Man’ (a lover, a husband, a boyfriend, a brother,a father, agrandfather, a gay man) who unconditionally loves and respects his outspoken, sassy, self-possessed and passionate women (Broads) in his life.
We salute you for being supportive and encouraging. We salute you for being a rock and a soft place to land when we need to.We salute you for having the brains to know that we are more than just a pretty face and tits and ass.
We salute you for having the balls to not be intimidated.
We salute you for embracing and relishing in the outspoken, the bold, the unrestrained, and the sassy, cheeky, bawdy and salty Broads that we can be.
It’s a special kind of Man who can and who will stand behind a Broad but we like it best when you stand beside us.
Have you ever ate a Gator burger? After a juicy little debate on the fan page over the burgers and particularly the bun at said unnamed establishment, I took a long time friend and self proclaimed Bon Vivant,Jef Farquharson to a trendy spot on College St in Toronto, Canada to try the one weekend only “Alligator Burger”.Please note:This is not a review of the establishment. This is not about the toppings or the condiments. This is only about the Burger (meat ) itself.See, in Canada..something as exotic as alligator is not a common menu item..so of course it had to be tried.Alligator is better known as “The Other White Meat” In searching around the web it seems most people agree that it tastes like chicken.
I didn’t think so. In fact it didn’t taste much like anything or better put it tasted like an unidentifiable fish.I was sorely disappointed as I thought I was going to devour an ‘out of this world’ burger.
I thought I was going to have a good chew and I love a good chew. The texture was soft and somewhat mushy and with every bite it was more and more unforgettable. The ‘chicken of the swamp’, alligator burger was not as exotic as it sounds.I won’t be eating a gator burger ever again.
Have you ever ate a Gator Burger? what was your take on it?
Did ya know? Alligators are bred on farms and ranches so you can eat their meat
Now, let’s talk about Jef..Not only is he a self proclaimed Bon Vivant. He is also an actor, singer and MC. With his spitfire repartee and salty mouth, if he were a female he would make a quintessential Burger Broad.
If you live in Toronto you can catch him every Monday hosting an open stage for musicians and the like at The Painted Lady
Footnote: Don’t let the pictures fool you,Jef didn’t like the burger either but he did like the bun;)
Torontonians give their south of the border cousins a run for their burger money when it comes to burger love and let’s just all admit …..downright burger obsession. In the past few years the city has become populated with burger joints ranging in price from $6-$20 and beyond. With such a plethora of choice there’s sure to be a burger for any size wallet and appetite. So, it was only a matter of time that a burger fest was bound to happen and happen it did!
This past week, a local publication called The Grid TO hosted the first annual Burger Week showcasing 25 restaurants and their week special of $5 burgers with Sunday June 3rd being the culmination of BurgerDay held at The Artscape Wychwood Barns with 25 vendors, guest speakers, live music and a beer garden.
Yes, we know, National Burger Month is May and National Burger Day is May 26th but what the hell, let’s just extend it for a few more days because when it’s not hockey season or construction season it’s Burger Season!
The day started at 11:30am and was supposed to go til 4:30 but by 2-2:30 pm the vendors were beginning to run out of burgers.Twitter tweets estimated that 11,000 sliders were sold in just 3hrs! The event was so packed that after awhile it just wasn’t fun anymore. At it’s peak people were standing in line to get in,standing in line to get tickets, standing in line (10 minutes or more wait) to get sliders. Overall, the event was a success, obviously, but as much as Wychwood Barns is a great place to hang out and get to know your local artisans, next year we hope Burger Day will be in a bigger venue and that it will have the foresight to not run out of burgers.
Lucky for us, we arrived early but it was still impossible to the wallet and the belly to try every single slider at $3 bucks a burger pop so we ate about 5 of them.
Instead of teasing you or boring you (depending on your mood) with colorful words on what burgers/sliders we ate….the haggis, the lamb, the beef, the different kind of cheeses, the secret sauces, the perfect buns etc…
On request from a few of our facebook fans who wanted to know who some of the Burger Broads were they had been seeing in previous burger eating videos I thought it time to do a little showcase and give them each a spotlight about who each of them are when they are Not eating a burger.
Afterall, this burger eating business is more than just about burgers;)
These Broads are talented, creative, funny, smart, witty and definitely not camera shy but definitely raw.organic.fresh and messy. They love the skin they’re in. They are not Babes. They are not Barbies. They are Broads. Broads with a healthy sense of humor who can be free, sassy, cheeky, bawdy ..even cheesy;) and they like to EAT! and did I mention? They love Burgers and everything about Burgers.
Welcome to the third showcase feature in our Monthly Sunday Series of

This Broad never stops! When she is not making burgers at home or munching on one in her neighbourhood she is also a regular contributor here on the blog and somehow she still finds the time to create original, fresh and crafty things such as one of a kind thongs and waist belts, create digital art, paint backdrops for local bands and volunteer her skills, talents and time for events such as The Chocolate Ball.
You can see her here in the Dangerous Dan’s Video. She is also one of our behind the scenes on set photographer for our video shoots. In front of the camera or behind it she is a beautiful force to be reckoned with and watch fly in a kaleidoscope of colors.
