Continuing with our “Meet Your Local Farmer” this story is a little different.
Aw heck, it’s very different.City kids take note!
Back in July we made a road trip to visit Landman Gardens & Bakery just north of Grand Valley, Ontario.
What made this trip so special was the fact that the farm was pretty much operated by the 6 brothers and sisters who range between the ages of 14-22yrs. A third generation operated farm, these grounded, mature and personable siblings love what they live and do and by taking things into their own hands, thinking outside the box,and making plans for the future in the name of agriculture they strongly believe in farming sustainability by always keeping the impact on the environment as minimal as possible.
With their fresh and forward thinking not only do they run the farm that consists of cattle, pigs, goats, turkeys, chickens and the vegetable gardens but have also started up a bakery and a CSA program (Community Shared Agriculture) currently feeding 34 families within the area.
Upon arriving at the farm the first thing our eyes behold is the Blackhouse with a living roof that their father built. It is the only one like it in Canada and in the near future will be readied for private dinner parties by candlelight.
Burger Broad Jo and myself spent the entire afternoon with Josh, Becky and Carter
as they told us about their family history and then giving us a tour of their family farm and gardens.
It was a great way to spend the day, meet some very nice folk and learn the ways of an agricultural life. It’s not an easy life but these kids sure make it look fun and rewarding.
I could go on and on but I will let the pictures speak for themselves.
